In a nutshell, affiliate marketing is marketing that involves some form of partnership.
That may be paying others to market your site, having a banner swap.
Much can be achieved by working with someone who's products and services compliment yours.

Once again you made me understand one of the many concepts there are in the marketing and advertising field.

Though I must say, it's not always paying someone, you can also trade :)
