Television and radio advertising
« on: January 20, 2012, 09:33:11 PM »
I'm watching tv for the first time in a while, and am seeing some commercials I've never seen before.  That got me wondering about advertising on tv and radio.

I've heard on a local news radio station how successful some of the advertising is, and wonder exactly how true it is.

Is it worth advertising on the radio?  When you hear the ads or see them on tv, are you more inclined to buy what you see or hear?  Do you actually believe what you see or hear?

I often will try a product because I saw it on tv, but usually find that it doesn't live up to what they say it will, and I never buy it again.  It's almost like false or misleading advertising.

I think some advertising should be outlawed when it proves to be false, don't you think?

Radio and Tv advertising is very powerful. This is because TV and radio both have a huge follower base and they are broadcasting all the time. Also tv and radio give the person a certain sense of security. People will listen to the messages and will try to look at it just because of curiosity.

And of the other issue. Miss leading commercials are illegal and when you have been tricked by a commercial and the end product does not do as it was told in the commercial you have the option of suing the company.

I think both are powerful ways. There are a lot of listeners for TV and Radio. We can reach a lot of people within a small amount of time. I do watch interesting advertisements in TV and follow them wisely. I prefer products seen in ads than products that I never heard of.  :)

Exactly as Mak said. people have more trust in products that they have heard of or what they have seen before via media channels. Even i have bought a program after hearing about it from the radio, and i would say it was money well spent.

I haven't had the best experience in the world when buying after being influenced by tv or radio ads.  That's the problem I have.  Sometimes it's ok, but not always.

I really get influence from the advertisements of food items.  8) I do select some other products also. Mostly I depend on advertisements to taste varieties of foods.  :)

Food ads are so misleading, even print advertising.  You see a burger or something and think that it looks good, but when you go and buy it, it's not the same.  It's far smaller than it looks in the ad, and that's disappointing.

I know what you mean kris. Mcdonalds has especially bad commercials. On the pictures they show a huge burger but in reality it sucks bad. But still, you bought it, meaning the ad campaign was successful. If you want to be successful in marketing and advertising you need to be a shark.

Exactly like Edmund said. You bought it because the ad campaign was successful.  What happens if everyone buys exactly like what you do? Sales sales  8)

The commercials must be impressed by the viewers to become successful. Have you noticed a commercial about a coffee powder? I don't know the product name correctly. But I was really impressed with the commercial. Main theme of their commercial was "only perfect coco from Ghana goes to make Melbourne"  Underlined name is product, don't know whether it is the correct name. But the commercial is really funny and mind capturing.  :)

Sure there might be sales, but in the non-food industry there can also be returns.  Meaning that a sale is void.  Then the business is lost on the retailer.  So it doesn't always work out in the end.

Yes I believe radio and television advertising works really well. A lot of people see thousands of commercials each day they watch tv as well as when they're on the road to work/school/whereever they hear commercial after commercial advertising this and that. The more people hear or see it the more they usually want whatever is being sold.

Through TV and radio advertising, you can let people know your product's features, discounts, special prices etc. Advertising is a great opportunity to prove that your product is better. Suppose that there are 2 washing powder commercials.

first one says: washing powder1 cleans your clothes from dirt within seconds.
second says : washing powder2 cleans your clothes from all kind of stain and spreads fragrance.

Here product2 has more features. People will prefer product2.  :) Just like this, we can utilize the ads to impress customers.

There is a point in what Mak is trying to show here. But it also depends on the look of the products and how they are presented. People do not usually like descriptions if they are too long. Often it is better to have a short and catchy slogan.
But as a twist to this smart advertisers add things like "Tired of the "insert item here" not working? Now here is a solution" or "Throw away all the not working junk! And get "name here" it will solve your problems" or "You have been lied to drop the "old products" because specialist "say, have found out, discovered, have made for YOU!" that "insert name here" is the best!

It'd be interesting to hear if any of you folks have managed to measure ROI from a TV or radio campaign you've run vs online advertising. E.g. every £1000 on pay per click ads got you X visits and every £1000 on TV ads got Y visits (or even a more qualitative answer - I appreciate people might not want to share actual figures).

I know you can't measure the entire value of a campaign on how much web traffic it generates but it'd be useful to hear experiences.

You cannot compare PPC with TV ads. Tv ads can introduce about a product completely. Can a PPC ad do this? A visitor needs to click the ad in order to know more about the product. But what about a TV ad?
